Welcoming Address of the Most Rev. Gabriel Chang Bong-hun to the Holy Father
at the KKottongnae in the Diocese of Cheongju
(August 16, 2014, Training Center in KKottongnae)

1. Holy Father, today I cordially thank you for visiting the KKottongnae in the Diocese of Cheongju on behalf of all the faithful of the Diocese, the family members of the KKottongnae, and all the residents of the Northern Province of Chungcheong.

2. Following in the footsteps of Jesus, our Diocese, since the beginning of its establishment, has been carrying out various works for the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. In particular, it has committed itself to promote the educational works for the disabled children, such as the School of Our Lady for the blind, the Sacred Heart School for the deaf, and the School of the Holy Spirit for the emotionally disturbed. The Congregation of KKottongnae Brothers of Jesus established ‘School of KKottongnae’ in 2001 for the children who were abandoned, especially those given up because of their congenital disorders not only by single mothers but also the society.

3. Here, in this House for Hope where Your Holiness visit today, fifty disabled children from ‘School of KKottongnae’ are together with you. These children had to suffer from double abandonment: they were first abandoned by their parents because of their congenital disorders, and then again by the society, where nobody wants to adopt them because of the social prejudice against the disabled. However, now the children live happily in the KKottongnae, and they are also blessed to meet with Your Holiness.

As we see the Holy Father who came all this way to personally meet these disabled children, the poorer, and the most marginalized in our society, we can recall the love of God, who says that “Even should a mother forget her infant, I will never forget you” (cf. Is 49:15). Your Holiness, your visit seems to be a strong appeal that we must practice preferential love and concern for the disabled children.

4. On the occasion of the Holy Father’s visit to the KKottongnae of Eumseong, our Diocese is going to exert more efforts to be “a Church which is poor and for the poor” (Evangelii Gaudium, n.198). In particular, we will take the initiative in breaking down the high wall of social prejudice against the disabled and in broadening the social concern and understanding for them. Your Holiness, I would like to express once again my heartfelt appreciation for your visit.

Bishop of Cheongju

Discorso di benvenuto di Mons. Gabriel Chang Bong-hun,
