Welcoming Address of the President of the Association of Major Superiors

of Religious Women in Korea to the Holy Father

Your Holiness!

We offer a heartfelt welcome to you for your visit to Korea. We would like to say that your choice of Korea as the first country to visit in Asia is a historical event for the Catholic Church in Korea, and your visit gives a joy and, at the same time, a responsibility for the whole Church in Korea.

Thank you for giving us, Korean religious, an opportunity to meet you and have dialogue with you in person. This special opportunity to pray and talk with you is a very precious and meaningful moment for us. 

The Catholic Church in Korea has grown into maturity thanks to the sacrifice and spirituality of our martyrs. Today, however, the Korean society is suffering from the influences of the polarized world, dominated by capital and power. The Church in Korea needs a renewal, because she has also come under the influence of secularization fueled by neo-liberalism. In every part of our society, there are so many people who are groaning under pain and oppression, appealing to the Church for helping hands. In this situation, we find consolation and strength from your Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium. 

Being faithful to the teachings of the Church, and drawing encouragement from your words in Evangelii Gaudium, we religious are trying to live the Gospel, reaching out to the suffering neighbors to abide with them. Your words lead us to be always close to the helpless, listening to their cry and accompanying them. As you have emphasized the solidarity with the weakest as the fundamental aspect of the Church, we do our best to accompany them in our prayer. The establishment of the organization, so-called 'Talitha kum, Korea!' is a result of those efforts. 

We hope that your visit to Korea will be an opportunity to give impetus to the concrete journey of the Church in Korea. The Korean society and the Catholic Church in Korea will perceive the tenderness of the Universal Church, the 'Mother and Teacher' who soothes the wounds of our people, when they listen to your words during your apostolic visit. Your visit will also encourage us religious to ‘go out’ to proclaim the Gospel with courage. 

We have prepared spiritual gifts for you, waiting for your arrival to Korea: from April to July in this year, we recited the rosary and observed a fast once a week. 

We thank you once again with all our heart for your visit to Korea. May the blessing of God be always with you and your apostolic ministry.

Santità, amatissimo Papa Francesco! 

Con tutto il cuore diamo un benvenuto sincero a Lei per la sua visita in Corea del Sud. Data la Sua scelta per la Corea come luogo per la sua prima visita all’Asia, potremmo dire che si tratta di un evento di significato storico, è una gioia e allo stesso tempo è una responsabilità per la Chiesa coreana nel continente asiatico. La ringrazio ancora della sua disponibilità in questa speciale occasione di incontro e di dialogo con noi religiosi. Questa occasione per pregare e dialogare con Lei è davvero un momento prezioso e significativo per noi. 

La Chiesa coreana è cresciuta nutrendosi del sangue e della spiritualità dei martiri. Nonostante ciò, la società coreana odierna soffre in questi tempi di globalizzazione per il domino del capitalismo e del potere politico. Anche la Chiesa, essendo contaminata dal secolarismo aggravato dal neoliberalismo, ha bisogno di un rinnovamento. Dalla sofferenza e dall’oppressione in ogni parte della società sorge l’appello per un aiuto da parte della Chiesa. In tale situazione ci sentiamo consolati e rafforzati grazie alla Sua Esortazione apostolica Evangelii Gaudium.

Seguendo gli insegnamenti della Chiesa e le Sue parole nell’Evangelii Gaudium, noi religiosi stiamo cercando di mettere in pratica il vangelo, porgendo la mano al prossimo che geme per la sofferenza, ricordandoci delle Sue parole “Andate ai più deboli e ai più poveri per stare vicino a loro” lungi da ogni pensiero ideologico. Cerchiamo essere presenti con la preghiera nei luoghi bagnati dalle lacrime della gente che soffre, seguendo le Sue parole che sottolineano la solidarietà con i più deboli come la missione fondamentale della Chiesa. Come conseguenza di ciò è nata l’organizzazione ‘Talità kum, Corea!’.

Ci auguriamo, Santo Padre, che il Suo pellegrinaggio in Corea possa essere un’occasione per incoraggiare il cammino concreto della Chiesa locale. In tal modo la società e la Chiesa di Corea sentiranno la tenerezza della Chiesa universale, la ‘Madre e Maestra’, che accarezza le ferite del nostro popolo attraverso le Sue parole e la Sua visita. Al tempo stesso questa Sua visita potrà spingere i religiosi ad ‘uscire fuori’ per annunciare il Vangelo con coraggio.

Alla notizia della Sua visita alla Corea, nell’attesa del Suo arrivo, noi suore abbiamo preparato dei doni spirituali per Lei: a partire da Aprile fino a Luglio abbiamo offerto le recite del rosario e il digiuno settimanale. La ringrazio di nuovo con tutto il cuore, Santità, per la Sua visita alla Corea, e Le auguriamo la benedizione del Signore in ogni passo del Suo cammino.
