Welcoming Address of the President
Of the Catholic Lay Apostolate Council of Korea
to the Holy Father
(August 16, 2014, Center of Spirituality in Kkottongnae)

Our beloved Holy Father,

We all thank you for your visit to Korea and the Church in Korea, and we welcome you with all our heart.

From the moment when we heard the news of your visit, we began to count the days with a palpitating heart like a child. We, Korean laity in every diocese, read your apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium to ponder upon it and live a life in conformity with your intention, and we prayed that our Lord Jesus would always accompany you on your journey of love.

The Church in Korea began its journey with some lay persons without the help of foreign missionaries. Our ancestors in faith earnestly wanted to invite the clergy for a long time: they sent letters to the Apostolic See in Rome even in the midst of severe persecution. Some of them even walked a long distance up to Beijing in China many times to bring missionaries into Korea. Thinking of all their efforts, we are deeply touched by the fact that Your Holiness is personally in the midst of us now.

Your Holiness, you love in particular the poor as well as young people. We can see, how free you are in the ‘will of God’, and, in such freedom, how deep your love is for the people in all the peripheries. Your Holiness, you opened the door of our Church with your love. We want to live a life following your example. We want to follow the example of a pastor who goes out to look for the ninety-nine lost sheep in the peripheries, unchaining ourselves from our selfishness. The peripheries that we should reach out are the least brothers (cf. Mt 25,40) including the poor, the sick, those who are helpless and alone in aㅡ intolerable situation of injustice, those who have left the Church, as well as those youths who wander about without a dream. Another peripheries are our brothers and sisters in North Korea who are waiting for our help in the midst of hunger and oppression. Asian peoples who do not know God also belong to these peripheries.

Your Holiness, now we would like to ask you to give us encouraging words, so that we can go out to the peripheries in unity with our bishops. I thank you deeply for meeting us with your special love.

al Santo Padre (16 agosto 2014)

Amatissimo Santo Padre Francesco,

tutta la Chiesa ed il popolo coreano Le porgono un caloroso benvenuto, con cuore riconoscente, perché Lei, S. Padre è venuto a visitare la Corea e la Chiesa coreana.

Fin dal primo momento in cui abbiamo sentito la notizia della Sua visita, noi tutti, con cuore palpitante, proprio come dei bambini, abbiamo cominciato a contare i giorni che ci separavano da questo momento. Per vivere in unita’ con le intenzioni di Lei, Santo Padre, abbiamo meditato, in ogni diocesi, la Sua esortazione apostolica ‘Evangelii gaudium’ ed abbiamo pregato perché Gesù’ sia sempre con Lei, e l’accompagni con tutto il Suo amore.

La Chiesa coreana, caso unico nella storia, è iniziata per opera di alcuni laici senza l’apporto di missionari stranieri. I nostri antenati, per un lungo periodo, si sono preparati ad accogliere sacerdoti e religiosi che venivano dall’estero.

Questi primi cristiani, pur in mezzo al terrore della persecuzione, camminavano a piedi per migliaia di chilometri, molte volte fino a Pechino. Mandavano lettere di informazione alla Sede Pontificia in Roma. Il pensiero di tutto questo ed ora, Santo Padre, la sua presenza in mezzo a noi ci procura ancor di piu’ una enorme emozione e tanta gioia.

Santo Padre, che ama cosi particolarmente i nostri fratelli poveri ed i giovani,

Noi abbiamo visto quanto Lei sia libero nel cercare la ‘volonta’ di Dio’, e come questa libertà stia spalancando le porte della Chiesa, spingendola con amore a cercare tutte le persone nelle periferie.

Anche noi vogliamo vivere come Lei, Santo Padre.

Vogliamo uscire per cercare le novantanove pecore perdute, spezzando le strette catene del nostro egoismo. Vogliamo andare verso le periferie a cercare i fratelli più piccoli (Matteo, 25, 40), cioe’ i poveri, i malati, le persone che subiscono ingiustizie senza poter ricevere aiuto da nessuno. Le periferie  sono per noi anche i fratelli che si sono allontanati dalla Chiesa ed i giovani, che hanno perso speranza ed orientamento.

Pensiamo che per noi una delle periferie verso cui andare, siano i fratelli che vivono nel Corea del nord, al di la’ della linea di confine dove subiscono persecuzioni ed aspettano una mano da noi. Ma anche i popoli dell’Asia che vivono senza conoscere Dio sono una delle periferie per noi

Ringraziandola profondamente per il Suo speciale amore per noi laici e per averci ricevuto, Le chiediamo una parola che ci incoraggi ad andare verso le periferie in unità con i nostri vescovi.
