Welcoming address of the President

of Korean Conference of Major Superiors of Men’s Religious Institutes

and Societies of Apostolic Life to the Holy Father

Your Holiness!

I deeply thank you on behalf of the religious in Korea for your visit to this land which ardently needs encouragement and healing.

Your visit seems to be a sign of the Holy Spirit who wants us, the religious in Korea, to renew our mission as Lord’s disciples with hope overcoming frustrations. 

The world is amazed at every step you take. People open their mind as listening to your words. We, the religious, are always accompanying your journey in our prayer, as a flock of sheep following after a good shepherd.

As hope can build a bridge between faith and love, we pray with all our heart that you will be the hope of our own time. 

More than anyone else, we, the religious in Korea, want ourselves to be the hope of our time. We confess, however, that even if we have a mission to be the light and salt of the world through our life, we are losing the brightness and the taste.

Although we have to seek to do good for the Church and the world with our various charisma as gifts of the Holy Spirit, we confess that we give more importance to ourselves than the community, and we easily assimilate to the consumerism, rather than showing the example of moderation and sharing.

We confess that we are obscuring our identity and charisma, preferring compromise with secularism to renewal of ourselves.

We have confessed all our weakness before you as a good shepherd, because we want to be the hope of our own time through an authentic renewal of ourselves and also of our religious communities.

Hope is always alive in the whole history. We move forward towards faith and love with this hope, and we also know that hope is a good news. 

We want to become a new hope of our time again, and be the light and salt of the world. We will put our efforts to renew ourselves, so that this hope may encourage some ones, invite some others to contemplation and to a life of conversion. 

Your Holiness, a good shepherd for all!

You have shown us how a life of wonder and hope can bear witness to the presence of God. Now we want to bear witness to such a life of wonder and hope through our life. We will always accompany you and your apostolic journey with our life of witness. 

We would like to dare to ask you again to be our strong supporter by remembering us in your prayer and to continue to be an example for us, so that we can renew ourselves in the midst of secularism.

Santità, beatissimo Papa Francesco! 

La ringrazio di cuore a nome dei religiosi della Corea per la Sua visita nella nostra patria che ha un grande bisogno di incoraggiamento e di guarigione. La Sua visita è un segno dello Spirito Santo, il quale vuole che i religiosi in Corea vivano nella speranza e con il senso della missione superando ogni frustrazione.

Tutto il mondo si stupisce delle Sue parole e dei Suoi gesti, Le porge volentieri orecchio, e si sta trasformando ormai. Anche noi i religiosi con la preghiera La guardiamo nel Suo cammino come pastore buono. Ci auguriamo che Lei sia una speranza, quella speranza, ponte tra la fede e la carità, per il nostro tempo. In Corea ci si augura che soprattutto i religiosi siano la speranza di questi tempi. Confessiamo, tuttavia, che, anche se abbiamo il dovere di essere la luce e il sale della terra con la nostra vita stessa, stiamo perdendo la luce e il sapore. 

Sebbene dobbiamo cercare il bene per il mondo e per la Chiesa con i vari carismi, dono dello Spirito Santo, preferiamo il proprio io alla comunità e ci lasciamo trascinare dal consumismo, più che dallo spirito di temperanza e di condivisione. Corriamo il rischio di essere responsabili nel rendere ambigui la nostra identità e i nostri carismi, lasciandoci permeare dal secolarismo piuttosto che leggere i segni dei tempi tramite il rinnovamento. Confessiamo tutto questo a Lei, pastore buono, proprio perché vogliamo essere una speranza per i nostri tempi attraverso un autentico rinnovamento di noi stessi e delle nostre comunità religiose.

La speranza è sempre viva in tutti i tempi. Con questa speranza andiamo avanti con la fede e la carità, e sappiamo che proprio tale messaggio è il vangelo. Noi, i religiosi in Corea, vogliamo essere di nuovo la speranza per i nostri tempi per poter vivere come la luce e il sale. Vogliamo rinascere, perché tale speranza sia un motivo di coraggio per qualcuno, sia riflessione, e la vita di conversione sia aiuto per l’altro.

Attraverso di Lei, Santità, Papa Francesco, buon pastore di tutti, ci siamo resi conto di quanto lo stupore e la speranza possano testimoniare Dio. Ora anche noi vogliamo dare testimonianza con la vita a tali stupore e speranza. Vogliamo essere vicini a Lei con la testimonianza della vita, per il Suo cammino apostolico e per la sua salute. 

Ora, per concludere, osiamo chiederLe di pregare e di sostenere la nostra preghiera. Il suo esempio è segno per noi, che ci troviamo in mezzo al secolarismo, affinché possiamo rinnovarci col Vangelo.
