At the Closing Mass for the 6th Asian Youth Day
(17 August 2014, Castle of Haemi)
On behalf of the Korean and Asian bishops, I would like to thank His Holiness Pope Francis for his coming to meet with the Asian youth. Though the World Youth Day has always enjoyed the personal presence of a Pope, it is the first time for the Asian Youth Day to enjoy it. We cannot but feel great emotion and joy from the simple fact itself that we witness the youth of diverse backgrounds have come together to share, to confirm their fraternity in Jesus Christ, to enjoy themselves in communion, and to praise God in one faith, overcoming all the differences of their nationalities and languages. On top of that, the young Asians may have experienced an unprecedented moment of grace, and they also may have acquired the seed of courage and hope for their future, because the Holy Father shared a great affection and intimacy with them.
On this occasion, I would like to also thank His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, President of the FABC, and many Asian bishops who have participated in this event to meet with the Holy Father as well as to manifest their solidarity among the Churches in Asia. The Most Rev. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Bishop of Daejeon, and the members of the preparatory committee deserve special appreciation for their devoted efforts, along with many other people who did not spare themselves for this event. I believe that the Lord will compensate their self-sacrificing service.
I hope that all the participants of Asian Youth Day would find strong will and passion for searching for the foundation of their faith in their respective setting of life, opening up their closed mind, and walking along with Jesus Christ and the martyrs to proclaim the Gospel to the whole world.
May the Lord of peace bless you all with abundance so that you may overcome any challenge you may face with.

inseguito alla preghiera dopo la communione
della Messa di chiusura della Giornata della Gioventù dell’Asia (17 agosto 2014)
Ringrazio Sua Santità Papa Francesco con tutto il cuore a nome dei vescovi dell’Asia per essere venuto a stare vicino ai giovani asiatici. Alle Giornate Mondiali della Gioventù il Santo Padre ha sempre accompagnato i giovani, ma questa è prima volta che il Pontefice viene da tanto lontano assieme ai vescovi asiatici per assistere alle Giornate della Gioventù dell’Asia.
Non possiamo non commuoverci e rallegrarci anche solo per il fatto che i giovani che hanno la stessa fede si radunano, provenendo da vari contesti e superando i muri di differenti nazionalità e lingue, per confermare la loro fratellanza in Cristo e per far festa e lodare insieme Dio. Ma non solo questo. Dato che questa volta il Papa ha condiviso con i giovani molto tempo, credo che i giovani asiatici abbiano sperimentato, come non mai, momenti di grazia irripetibili, e che abbiano ricevuto il coraggio e un seme di speranza per il futuro.
Approfitto di questa occasione, per esprimere la mia gratitudine a Sua Eminenza Cardinale Oswald Gracias, Presidente della FABC (Conferenza Episcopale dei Vescovi di Asia), e ai molti vescovi dell’Asia, venuti da lontano per partecipare all’incontro con il Santo Padre e per confermare la solidarietà della Chiesa asiatica. Il mio grazie di cuore va anche a tutti coloro che per la preparazione di questa Giornata hanno lavorato senza risparmio instancabilmente, in particolare, a Mons. Lazzaro Heungshik Yu, il vescovo della Diocesi di Daejeon e agli altri membri della Commissione preparatoria. Spero che il buon Signore vi ricompensi in abbondanza.
Spero che tutti i giovani asiatici che hanno partecipato a questa Giornata, partendo dalla grazia e dalle esperienze fatte in questi giorni, possano uscire alla ricerca delle sorgenti della fede nei luoghi della loro vita quotidiana, bussando alle porte dei i cuori chiusi, camminando sempre insieme a Gesù e ai martiri, e spero che i giovani si rafforzino nella volontà e la passione di annunciare il Vangelo in tutto il mondo.
Mi auguro che il Dio della pace conceda a tutti voi la sua benedizione abbondante.
