Seosomun Martyrs' Shrine

The crossroads outside Seosomun (Small West Gate), along with Saenamteo, was the official execution ground in the Joseon Dynasty. Since the Sinyu Persecution in 1801, countless Catholics died here and 44 were later canonized as saints— making Seosomun the place of the highest number of martyred saints. The 124 Servants of God that are recently in the process of beatification includes some martyrs who were killed in Seosomun.

Saenamteo Martyrs‘ Shrine

Place of martyrdom : Father James Zhou Wenmo
Since the early period of the Joseon Dynasty, Saenamteo used to be a drill ground for the military troops before it became the execution ground for state prisoners. From 1801 to 1866, 11 priests, including 10 French missionaries and Fr. Andrew Kim Dae-gun, were martyred at this place.

Place of martyrdom : Matthias Choe Ingil, Saba Ji Hwang, Barbara Sim Agi, Barnabas Kim Iu
In the Joseon Dynasty, the Podo Cheong was built to capture thieves. However, after the arrest order of Fr. Zhou Wenmo, the first Chinese missionary sent to the Joseon Dynasty, the place became prison for Catholics. Bishop Mutel, the 8th Bishop of Joseon, was imprisoned here with many other faithfuls. In 1879, the last martyr of the Korean Church was killed in the Right Podo Cheong.

Danggogae Martyrs‘ Shrine

Place of martyrdom : Mary Yi Seongrye
Following Seosomun and Saenamteo, Danggogae has the third highest number of martyred saints. 9 out of 10 martyrs were canonized; Yi Seongrye, the mother of Fr. Choi Yangob, will be beatified in August 2014. She betrayed her religion once in order to save her young children, but later on turned herself in again to keep her faith and was executed in Danggogae.

During the Shinyu Persecution in 1801, the members of the Christian community in Gyeonggi area were mostly captured and executed in Gyeonggi Gamyeong, the office where provincial governors dealt with governmental issues in the Joseon Dynasty. Cho Yongsam, one of the martyrs in Gyeonggi Gamyeong, said the following famous words before he was executed: "There are not two Lords in Heaven, as there are not two hearts in a person. What I want to do is to die for the Lord, and I have nothing else to say."

As the heart of Korean Catholic Church and the Cathedral of the Seoul Archdiocese, Myeongdong Cathedral was built nearby the place where the first Christian community in Korea appeared in 1787. The bodies of the 9 martyred saints, including Bishop Imbert, Fr. Chastan, Fr. Maubant, Kim Seongwoo, Choi Kyeonghwan... etc., are enshrined in the basement of the cathedral.

Jeoldusan Martyrs’ Shrine (www.jeoldusan.or.kr)

Jeoldusan (literally as Decapitation Mountain) is the place where thousands of Catholics were executed during the Byeongin Persecution in 1866, ordered by Regent Heungseon to maintain his closed-door policy. Most of the martyrs' names were unknown, but they are witnesses of the faith and they illuminate us with their own sacrifice as example.

Yakhyun Church is the second parish established in the Archdiocese of Seoul, originally divided from Myeongdong Cathedral in November, 1891. Yakhyun Church is the first church in the history of Korea and the first church building of Gothic style. In 1893, Bishop Mutel celebrated Holy Mass in Yakhyun Church. Now, the church is in charge of the Seosomun Martyrs Memorial Exhibition Hall.

Kahoidong Church is in the site of Choi Ingil's house, the place where Fr. Zhou Wenmo, the first Chinese missionary to the Korean Church, celebrated the very first Mass in 1795. It is also in the site of the house of Kang Wansook, the woman who secretly helped Fr. Zhou during the persecution period. In 1955, the grandson of regent Heungseon, Prince Yi Kang and his wife were baptized in Kahoidong Church.
